The Portland Summer Night Events Worth Leaving the House For

Portland has an amazing summer and people here take it seriously. Once the weather turns, the city fills up with outdoor concerts, night markets, and rooftop bars that make you glad you live here. If you’ve been sticking to the same dinner spots and calling it a night early, there’s a lot you’re missing.

This guide covers the events and spots worth getting out for this season.

McMenamins Edgefield Concerts on the Lawn

Edgefield is about 20 minutes east in Troutdale on a 74-acre former county farm turned winery, brewery, and amphitheater. The sloped lawn holds up to 7,000 people and every spot has a clear sightline to the stage. The Tedeschi Trucks Band and Young the Giant are just some of the upcoming shows.

Get there early, grab a drink from one of the on-site bars, and walk the grounds before the show starts. The house-made ice cream at the concession stand is worth it. Being at Edgefield is half the reason to go.

PDX Live at Pioneer Courthouse Square

PDX Live runs free outdoor shows at Pioneer Courthouse Square through August, opening August 4 with Ani DiFranco and closing August 20 with Vince Staples. Bring a blanket, grab food from a nearby cart, and show up. It’s free, it’s walkable from most of downtown, and it draws a genuinely mixed crowd.

Last Thursday on Alberta Street

Every last Thursday of the month, NE Alberta shuts down to traffic from 15th to 30th Avenue between 6 pm and 9 pm. Hundreds of vendors set up, galleries open, street performers take corners, and live musicians play outside bars the length of the block. It’s been running since 1997.

Show up a little before 6 pm to get ahead of the crowd near the center of the strip. The side streets are worth walking for the performers who end up there.

Jade International Night Market

Every August, the Jade District in Southeast Portland hosts the Jade International Night Market, a celebration of the neighborhood’s Asian Pacific community with food vendors, artisans, and cultural performances. Thousands of people come through and the food lineup covers cuisines from across Asia.

Come hungry and give yourself time to work through the stalls. It’s one of the better food events the city puts on.

Revolution Hall Roof Deck

The Roof Deck at Revolution Hall in the old Washington High School building in Southeast Portland is open through the summer with cocktails, craft beer, pizza, and 360-degree views of the city. No tickets, no reservation required. Show up, get a drink, and watch the city from above.

On a clear evening, the view toward the West Hills is worth the trip on its own. Get there by 7 pm in peak summer to lock down a good spot before it fills.

Departure Restaurant and Lounge

Departure sits on the rooftop of the Nines Hotel downtown with pan-Asian food, solid cocktails, and views of the Willamette River, Mt. Tabor, and the Cascades on a clear night. It works for a celebration, a client dinner, or any evening that calls for something a step above casual. Ask the bartender what’s worth trying on the cocktail menu and make a reservation if you’re going on the weekend.

Go Find Your Spot

Portland has a lot going on this summer and most of it is either free or close to it. As a real estate agent in Portland, I stay plugged into what’s happening across neighborhoods because it matters when you’re helping someone figure out where to put down roots. Summer nightlife is one of the best ways to understand what a neighborhood actually feels like.

Pick one spot from this list and get out there this week.
